Since the USN M1917 Cutlass is derived from the Dutch M1911 Klewang, did the Cutlass use the same pattern wrist strap or sword knot as the Dutch Klewang? I have not seen a M1917 Cutlass with a wrist strap, but the guard has a cutout for the strap. Since the full guard on the Cutlass is not a direct copy of the basket guard of the Klewang, I presume that the Navy put the strap cutout there on purpose. The Klewang wrist strap is a pure utilitarian design with none of the braids and tassels of US designs.
