I am reminded of what Sir John Jervis (Lord St. Vincent) said to Parliament during the Napoleonic Wars. Parliament was worried Napoleon would cross the Channel and invade England.

Sir John said, "Gentlemen, I do not say Bonaparte will not come. But he will not come by sea."

I understand that Iran has a large number of small fast boats that can be armed with explosives or perhaps torpedoes . It has been hypothesized that if they attack one or a small number of US or other Navy ships that they can overwhelm their defences simply by sending a lot of them at one time. They also have a Chinese shore to ship missile called the silkworm (See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silkworm_(missile)) that could also cause casualties. I'm sure that Iran would lose but there will be casualties. What is needed is for Mr Trump to lay out the consequences in no uncertain terms in advance

This scenario has been gamed a lot. Smarming tactics would be a huge problem for our warships in the Gulf. A blockage by the Iranians will lead to a full out airwar. If it comes to it I can only hope that the countries that need the gulf oil carry the fight.

I would not like to make odds on those North Sea built plastic hulled DE submarines the Iranians have being wiped out early on.

The problem I see on fighting Iran is they would bring Russia into the act and we would be fighting them as well. Just like the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Back in the 70's I worked in Bander Abbas where the Shah kept his navy. They were all old US boats and they were maintained by ex-servicemen from the US. I do not have any first hand information now, but back then they couldn't organize a piece of tail in a brothel with a handful of one hundred dollar bills. What would make me think that they are any better now after being run by a bunch of religious nut bars for the last 40-50 years?
