Dr Melina Abdullah on Tuesday said that she supported Smollett because 'we can never believe police, especially the Chicago Police Department (CPD)'

Smollett was described as someone 'who has been courageously present, visible, and vocal in the struggle for Black freedom'

Abdullah added: 'Police lie and Chicago police lie especially'

Other liberals have condemned Smollett, including figures such as Rev. Al Sharpton, and a researcher with the Southern Poverty Law Center
