1911 external extractors

Are the extractors used on S&W and Sig 1911 pattern handguns the same and interchangeable? Place I used to work has a Smith 1911 at a low low price and my 'won't' power is running low.

Guy working there says sales are down so low nationwide an industry publication estimates significant LGS closures in the next year or so.

I would not think they would interchange - competitors with no reason to make them interchange. Kimber had three different external extractors. The external extractor is cheaper/easier to make - but inferior to the original Spring Steel M1911 extractor.

Problem is, someday when you need an extractor - will it still be available? Standard parts for the 1911 will be..... CC
