    My new baby

I finally got a 1911 again. I picked up a brand new Rock Island 1911-A1 for $450. Then slapped on some cheap grips I had Duracoated. It went all of 5 minutes before I started customizing...LOL Hopefully it's as good as I have heard they are.

I bought an American Tactical Military 45acp recently. It was made in the Philippines too. Excellent workmanship and fit. I also paid $450 which included tax and 50 rnd. box of Remington JHP. I put checkered tiger stripped wood grips on it plus a flat mainspring housing w/lanyard loop. Any parts from Colt fit right in. My slide is tight with no rattle, trigger pull is OK and the fixed sights are right on at 25 yards. Big bang for the buck.

Fit and finish on this is excellent for what it is. I took it apart as soon as I got it and removed moist of the oil which was literally dripping from it. Every part was atleast as good as GI spec which is all I was asking at $450. Only thing I think was sub par was the finish to the sides of the barrel nut. This ofcourse is VERY minor.

I plan to change out allot of the parts on this but I wanted a decent quality, cheap gun that I could shoot, not a mixmaster I have to finish before I can shoot it. I really feel like I got my moneys worth.

Guamsst.....nice looking 1911! I recently picked up a RIA Tactical for $419, put about $125 additional into trigger work, fiber optic sights, and a nice pair of grips, and love it! Shoots great as well.

I took it apart and polished the sear very lightly, then the front of the main spring moderately and finally I went to work on the rear and sides of the trigger itself until it was like glass. The trigger was pretty good before and I didn't technically lighten it, but it is SMOOOOTH now and for a free upgrade, I am very happy with the work. My goal is to build a custom 1911 that shoots well and looks good for as cheap as possible. Now that this one is holding a decent group, I may buy another at the next Ft. Worth show if budget permits.

I bought mine a few years ago for $395.00 and installed GI grips, hammer and mainspring housing. It's reliable and fun to shoot but I don't use it for self defense.

I also bought one about three years ago. The "smooth" as/issued grips lasted about five minutes - just long enough for me to install some GI grips.

LOL Refering to your 1911 as your new "baby" would not go well in my buddy's house... His wife is constantly complaining about him spending more time cleaning his guns than playing with his three kids.... to which he responds..."we have THREE kids??
