1911 help

I just bought a colt 1911 with a supposedly interesting story behind it. The gun is in terrible condition, but the story behind it is it belonged to a survivor of the Indianapolis. I love 1911's but know absolutely nothing about collector colts.
I need help identifying this gun. serial # C 87116

First off it is not a 1911. The C prefix on the serial number indicates it is a Government Model which was the commercial version of the Model 1911. Made in the 1917 time frame, but without pictures there isn't much left to tell.
