    Colt Super .38 1929 s/n 146 hammer engraved USS-8

This 1st week or possibly first day production pistol is beautiful, 100% original and shows very little wear with at least 97 % of finish remaining. The hammer is marked just forward of the checkering. According to the Colt letter it was shipped to Townley Metal & Hardware Company Kansas City Missouri on February 26, 1929 total guns in shipment 15. I have searched the internet for hours trying to get some clues as to the engravings origin. I first thought maybe a military vessel but nothing there. I also thought maybe it belonged to United States Steel Corporation but again nothing on the internet regarding that. Have you ever seen one like it? What is your guess?
