    1940 Colt GM

    This Swartz safety Colt GM is the pistol featured on pp. 58-59 in Clawson's Colt .45 Government Models 2nd Edition. It was being built about now...in 1940.

        No...just one of the Colt inspection marks.

            Looks very similar to a British military proof mark, of crossed pennants. Just coincidence of course.

              You're right that mark looks like a British proof, that's quite mysterious.
              On this picture, the 1911 wears all the British marks, included crossed pennants.
              Interesting to dig!

                The 18 pistols in this shipment went to (purchased from the Seattle Hardware Co.) the forest service in Washington state. Maybe----this one got to close to the Canadian border.

                  In your post are the crossed pennant proof mark from a .455 Colt Government Model or holly of holly's a 45acp?

                    Thanks for the information on this shipment. What is your source? Colt factory Archives? I received factory letters with many of the pistols I purchased from Mr. Clawson, but do not recall getting one for this pistol. I'm relatively sure he had one because he had the assembly date and shipping info...just couldn't find it at the time.

                        Just WOW!
                        "There's a race of men that don't fit in,
                        A race that can't stay still;
                        So they break the hearts of kith and kin,
                        And they roam the world at will." - Robert Service
