X prefix serial numbers on Model 1911 and 1911A1 pistols are renumbered. If the pistol lost it's serial number for any reason from being stolen and recovered with the serial number removed, or lost during the refinishing process, the new serial number had an X prefix. According to Clawson this was initiated in April of 1924, beginning with serial number X1000. The five character serial number was used through serial number X4385. The numbering system then jumped to X2693614.

Personally I would not buy one of the X numbered pistols without good authentication. The system has been used by the less scrupulous to legitimize a pistol that has had it's serial number removed.

According to Clawson there was a group of 100 numbers from X2694049 to X2694148 assigned February 18, 1952, but no record of who they were assigned to.
