Offered is an exceptionally nice Winchester M1 Carbine. The Carbine is an early 1960's DCM release, though no DCM paperwork accompanies the rifle. Condition is exceptionally nice as would be expected from an immediate post WWI rebuild and there are no import marks. The 70-year old former owner remembers his dad, a WWII vet, excitedly receiving the carbine via railway express in the early 60's.
The receiver is in the late 5.5 million block dating the rifle to the first quarter of 1944. The barrel is W marked for Winchester. The recoil plate is marked AU and buttplate appears to be unmarked. The op rod is W marked for Winchester. The bolt is a flat blued bolt marked U for Underwood. The front sight is marked SI U for Underwood. The front band is type 3 and marked SI for Inland. The trigger group is Inland marked with an M marked magazine release with maker mark W SG for Saginaw, an N marked flip safety for NPM and a WU marked hammer for Universal Winding. The rear sight is a milled type two, marked H in a shield and is likely original to the carbine.
The most interesting part of the carbine is the stock. It is a nicely figured piece of low wood walnut marked in the sling slot Trimble TN normally associated with NPM, or IBM carbines. It's marked W on the bottom of the pistol grip. Also an extremely nice SA/SHM cartouche on the left side for Stephen H McGregor. Colonel McGregor was the superintendent of Springfield Armory from late 1945 through mid 1947 and supervised the initial rebuild program at SA immediately after WWII. The handguard is a 4-rivet IO marked piece. The former owner placed tiny initials in the sling slot too.
