    Shooting at night

Sitting here its night, hearing gunshots. People target shooting during the day here is common but I always wondered why people shoot at night. Is that common? Not counting the city stuff of course. No feral hogs here either.

Does.it sound like center fire , If center fire , maybe there are some police training centers in the vicinity . Also shotgun matches are often at night .
If rimfire , it could be someone testing ammo , or small matches .
Damage permits , deer or maybe coyotes .

Maybe they're shooting tracers and watching the light show.

Coyotes would be a possibilty. Plenty of those here.

If only one or two shots then silence, most likely spotlighting. Usually .22 cal crack is what you will hear.

If you heard my shot, I wasn't aiming at you.

Black powder guns give a really good show at night! Short barreled magnum pistols will ruin your night vision for sure.

In my region most shooting is done at night under neon sign and streetlight conditions.

I got in trouble with our first night qualification. We were allowed to purchase our own pdw as long as it was 38/357 nothing else. I had a M28 4" and I loaded my own. The other deputies were using issued ammo, mine looked the same as theirs until we touched off. Theirs was a show, a BIG BALL OF FIRE and after the first shot they were all over the target. Mine was not as visible and I could stay on target. From memory I believe it was IMR-4227. The Sheriff came over to see what I was using so he looked at my spent brass, Winchester nickeled brass same as theirs. I said perhaps mine came from a different lot with a different powder, he wasn't the wiser. I had shot the issued ammo and I could not shoot as well as with my load. In the country rounds often go off at night, some varmint, some shotgun. Had one neighbor who was trying to correct a gun shy hound dog, fired a round or two at no exact time.
