            I wonder if that's where McMurtry got the idea for the long shot by Gus in Lonesome Dove?

                Could be -- McMurty uses a lot of actual historical events in his books. For example, when Gus is shot by an arrow, the whole scene is lifted from Oliver Loving's encounter with the Comanche while opening the Goodnight-Loving Trail.
