I wonder if it is the hats that are so big or the people are so scrawny? Starvation would also account for the unhappiness. Knowing that you will be executed for saying the wrong thing, speaking at all or looking at someone incorrectly probably doesn't help things either. Then there's the parasites that some of these people have in them. The whole country has got to seem like a prison to them. The mere fact that so many of them try to defect indicates they know there are greener pastures.
