Dick's did the same thing with me. The manager was upfront about it as we were walking out. "Sorry about this but it's corporate policy". I was already aware of that but it was nice of her to mention it. Further conversation revealed complaints from shoppers, "afraid for their lives" upon seeing someone walking about the store with a gun in a box.
She mentioned something about security too. Thieves grabbing a gun from a shopper while on the property and making off with it.
They have no problem holding onto it until you decide to leave. So, you can buy it and continue to shop if you so choose but you cannot have it until escorted to the door.
