Never understood why they were considered preferable to the old, folding, garrison cap, which required no special shaping to look proper, & could be slipped neatly under an epaulette when indoors.

When I was at Ft. Bragg, NC, berets never looked that sloppy! We wore 'baseball hats'. S.F. wore berets.

"...S.F. wore berets..." USAF Air Police too I think. Those SF green berets were made here. Exactly the same as the one I wore.
"...slipped neatly under..." Beret gets stuffed in a pocket and doesn't lose its shape. One never puts one's beret under an epaulette though. You don't leave your hat on the shelf in the Mess coat room with the cap badge on it either. Cap badge won't be there when you go back.

I don't recall seeing any berets near the Laotian border back when the bullets were flying. I'm sure they had berets, they just preferred the bush hat. Regards, Clark

                    Berets are un-American, IMHO.
