For you Civil War buffs. Anyone recognize these kids?

You and your 4th grade class? I knew you were a little older than me but I hadn't realized how much!

On a serious note, no I don't recognize those kids. For all I know they are Teddy Roosevelt's cousins.

Correct. Humiston’s identity was not known when he was found in the town of Gettysburg. The photo of his kids that he held was circulated by the newspapers. His wife eventually saw it and realized she was a widow.

This 1867 photo was reprinted after the war and sold to fund an orphanage in Gettysburg.

The printing on the reverse of the photo is a little fuzzy. It says:

The Children of the Battlefield

This is a copy of the Ferrotype found in the hands of Sergeant Humiston of the 154th New York Volunteers as he lay dead on the Battlefield of Gettysburg.

The copies are sold as furtherance of the Sabbath School effort to found and endow the National Homestead at Gettysburg for Orphans of our Soldiers and Sailors, in Memorial of our Perpetrated Union.

This picture is private property and cannot be copied without wronging the Soldiers Orphans for whom it is published.
