    Should be able to ace, Vern? There are a lot of so-called trick questions in there. For instance #1. Pinta was a nickname for her, not a proper name. #5, Why didn't Minnesota make the list? The Vikings might have been here before Coronado. Then again, they weren't States back then which means I have to think forward...arggg

    You surely have me thinking and trying out my memory recall on some of the others too.

      Well, my answers would have been mostly wrong since 80 years before Columbus Europeans visited St. Augustine FL and set up the first settlement. With them they brought slaves consisting of whites, blacks and later made slaves of the Native Americans. While this would not change some of the answers to the questions above it would bring about unwanted and untaught answers to others. Before Columbus there were a slew of visitors from Europe and elsewhere.

        RE the first quiz, I knew them all; however, I actually google-searched #8.
        Then, my computer sirens went off and I am scheduled for some sort of special work counseling. Great, perhaps they can help me with my piled up queue of projects!

          By 1088 the Vikings had made it as far south as Massachusetts and maybe Rhode Island as they have now found Rune marked stones there.

              Here you are:

              1 Give the proper names of Columbus' three ships.

              All Spanish ships were named after saints, but many also had nicknames. Columbus' three ships were:

              Santa Maria de la Imaculata Concepcion.
              Santa Anna -- nicknamed "Pinta" because she was brightly painted
              Santa Clara -- nicknamed "Nina" because her owner was Juan Nino, and she was such a sweet little ship

              2. Name the ship or ships that brought the first successful English colonists to America.

              The Jamestown Colonists arrived aboard the Susan Constant, the Godspeed and the Discovery.

              3. Name the oldest continuously-settled English speaking town in America.

              Hampton, Virginia, built on the site of the Strawberry Banks, where the early colonists foraged for food.

              4. Name the oldest university in America

              The oldest university in America is the University of Lima, in Peru.

              5. Which of these states was the first to be visited by Europeans?

              De Soto arrived in Arkansas in 1541 and spent the winter near the site of the present town of Newark.

              6. After losing the battle of Concord, the British were besieged in Boston. Which army besieged the British?

              The New England Army. Not until June 16th of 1775 did Congress adopt the New England Army, which then became the United States Army.

              7. During the Revolution the flagship of the United States Navy was named after a book. What was that book?

              The Bon Homme Richard was named for Benjamin Franklin's "Poor Richard's Almanac"

              8. The British surrender at Yorktown ended the American Revolution.

              a. What was the name of the British general who surrendered?
              b. What was the name of the American general to whom he surrendered?

              General Charles Cornwallis begged off, claiming to be sick and sent General Charles O'Hara to surrender his army. The surrender was accepted by the American General Benjamin Lincoln.

              9. In the old British monetary system, the units were pounds, shillings and pence. What are the units in the modern American monetary system?

              The units of the American decimal monetary system are:

              The Mil
              10 Mils = 1 Cent
              10 Cents = 1 Dime
              10 Dimes = 1 Dollar
              10 Dollars = 1 Eagle

              10. With what nations does the United States share common boundaries?

              The United States shares common borders with Mexico, Canada and Russia (the US-Russian border runs between Big and Little Diomede Islands in the Aleutians.)

              11. Name the northernmost, southernmost, easternmost and westernmost states.

              Northernmost = Alaska
              Southernmost = Hawaii
              Easternmost = Alaska
              Westernmost = Alaska
              (Look at a globe.)

              12. Who was the first President of the United States?

              John Hanson was the first President of the United States under the Articles of Confederation adopted in 1781. (Washington was not President until after the Constitution was ratified, taking office in 1789.)

              13. Where is the Cherokee Strip?

              The Cherokee Outlet extends from northeast Oklahoma straight west, and its western section forms the Oklahoma Panhandle. Due to a surveying error, the northern boundary of the Cherokee Outlet lies two and a half miles north of the Oklahoma border. This two and a half mile wide strip is called the Cherokee Strip, and naturally is in Kansas.

              14. Is there a Constitutional right to education? Where do you find it?

              Education is not mentioned in the United States Constitution. It is one of those functions left to the states. You will find the right to an education in your state constitution. For example, in Arkansas, it is in Article 14.

              15. The bell-shaped façade of the Alamo is one of the great American icons. Who built that façade?

              The façade of the Alamo did not exist during the siege of 1836. There was only a bare wall. The signature scalloped roof line of the Alamo was not part of the building until 1849. It was added by the U.S. Army when it leased the former chapel from the Catholic Church to use for storing hay and grain. The two outer windows on the upper level also were added at that time.

              16. What was the last state admitted to the Union as a slave state?

              West Virginia was admitted to the Union on June 20 of 1863, during the Civil War as a slave state.

              17. Jews were expelled from England on 18 July 1290, from France on 22 July, 1306 and from Spain in 1492.

              Have Jews ever been expelled in the United States?

              General Order No. 11 was issued by Major-General Ulysses S. Grant on December 17, 1862, during the American Civil War. It ordered the expulsion of all Jews in his military district, comprising areas of Tennessee, Mississippi, and Kentucky.

                  On the 16th of June, 1775, Congress voted to adopt the New England Army and to raise 10 companies of riflemen from the mountains of western Virginia. These acts created the Continental Army (which is also the US Army.) June 16th is still celebrated in the Army as the Army's birthday.
