they must pay CR for a few points or something. I am NOT impressed.
I won't be buying a trane for replacement.
Best unit I had believe it or not was the "contractor special" junk in my first house. it was a GE. Same with all the cheapo bottom line appliances that came with that house. NEVER a problem. Here, I've had "high end" CHIT and it is indeed CHIT

You won’t believe this, but Trane bought the GE central AC business many years ago.

I suppose a/c units like refrigerators, washers and dryers all were built in the U.S. at one time. Most either made great items that lasted or they made crap, word got out, and they went under. Those that survived built good reputations for reliability. Over time, because of greed, union disputes and cheap foreign labor they resourced more and more manufacturing overseas and cut corners. I had to replace my inside unit a couple of years ago and could not find anyone who made copper coils. I had to go with aluminum. Time will tell how well it holds up.

My old Maytag washer was great but when I replaced it with a new Maytag I had nothing but problems. I got rid of it and replaced it with a commercial Amana with an extra large SS tub. It lasted about 2 years before the seal leaked water into the transmission. I then found out that Amana is made by the same company as Maytag, Whirlpool, Kenmore and many others. A person would have to buy a Samsung or LG or such to get something different. Don't know about GE.

Getting back to old a/c's. I have a friend/neighbor who has a Payne a/c. I remember it when I was young--it is 50-60 years old and still running well. It's the large rectangular squatty type that you don't see anymore. Over the years they've had it serviced and repaired but parts of the original unit remain. I'm surprised anyone makes parts for it. Based upon their good luck my parents bought a Payne and it was a payne in a$$ that didn't last any time at all.

Well, Merc, I'm glad there is somebody else who milks every bit of life out of everything he owns. I have found that the chewing gum and bailing wire solution can have drawbacks sometimes but over all the ride it until it dies solution has worked for us.

The A.C. that came with our house was awoefully inefficient builder's model and about 10 years after we bought it we replaced the outside unit and coils which dropped our bills by about 40%. That unit (I don't recall the maker) went after 20 yrs +-. Fortunately it's outside went in the spring when HVAC people are hurting and we got a sweet deal on a new unit (Amana,) big discount and same as cash financing for two years. I like using other peoples money for free. We also replaced at that time the original furnace which was way past its prime along with new ducting, thermostat the whole deal. We have had two minor repairs but it cranks along very well.

          All our appliances are gas.
