The Battle of the Bulge begins. I knew Robert Clayton, 1920-2002, 10th Armored Division. Wounded, lost his left index finger.

    Yup . . .

My old foreman, a combat engineer, once told me his experience that morning.

He said that was one of two times he thought he would perish.

When I was teen age I worked at an automotive repair shop and gas station in Huntington Station NY. The owner Duke Mortimer was at the Battle of the Bulge. He said that the war was going pretty good and he felt he was going to make it home OK. When the Germans attacked he felt all bets were off and would be surprised if any of his outfit would survive. Many didn't but he did and told of fighting Germans that he didn't think existed, there was so many of them with tanks and artillery. One hell of a battle.
