Underwood Carbine

I ran into an elderly gentleman that has a late Underwood marked carbine in the six million serial number range. But it has A. W. Stamped under the serial number. The barrel is Winchester and some of the other parts are too. The owner said it was a restamp. Winchester to Underwood. He thought it was something special and quite rare. I don't know exactly what he has there. Any help would be appreciated.

Not rare. But it's a Winchester carbine not an Underwood. When Underwood finished their contract for carbines they had quite a few receivers unused including sub-contractor receivers. Winchester bought them all finish or unfinished. Then they went to some of the sub-contractors and bought any receivers they had. That is what he has. One made by Universal winding for Underwood. Serial numbers were listed as between 2401000 and 2491000. So not rare but not common. Adds about $50 to $100 to the value of the carbine. Those direct from the sub-contractors would have gotten a Winchester serial number.

"...exactly what he has there..." Typical Carbine. 99.99% of 'em went though a postwar rebuild. And none of the manufacturers made all the parts.
Underwood actually made more of the parts than Winchester did, but it's not usual for a Underwood to have a Winchester barrel. Even though Underwood made 1,706,436 carbine barrels for their Carbines and for other prime contractors.
