    Dresden

Read about it; Kurt Vonnegut wrote Slaughterhouse Five about his time there.

The British have been highly criticized for destroying Dresden but I have always felt that they did it solely as punishment for the evil that the Nazis did with the tacit support of much of the German population. Since my grandfather, aunt and 6 year old first cousin were murdered along with innumerable distant cousins, I have always been supportive of their actions. However, as the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche said "When you stare into the abyss the abyss stares back at you" so perhaps by supporting the British action I have become evil myself. I can live with that

It didn't shorten the war in any meaningful way. But the hounds had been loosed. Amis were similarly disposed to reduce Japan. War is hell.
