Installing an extractor collar

What’s the secret to installing an extractor collar on a bolt without distorting it? The few that I’ve installed have all ended up out-of-round.

As per “Colvin and Vaill” (Wolf Publishing Reprint), page 105 . . . . .

Operation 54 . . . .collar is heated to cherry red before bending . . . .
