I have a friend, a retired colonel, who feels when you reach 65 you should be issued a .45 and a box of ammo each year. It would be your job to clean out the gene pool.

In my county the cost of a permit drops to $20 per year after reaching 60. They have now added the option of $150 for lifetime over 60 or $300 for lifetime under 60.

Guess how I will renew? And renewals are done on line.

Alabama permits are good in several states too. They ones that don't honor them I don't care to visit anyway.
