Colonising a distant Planet ...

If the Human race doesn't go extinct, then in a distant
future we'll probably find a means of deep space flight.
Wanting to exploit other other worlds might be a case of
'because they're there' or, more likely it will be to relieve a
hugely overpopulated Earth. A colonisation program would
have to be mandatory as only a few stalwarts would be
likely to volunteer. As long as you're fertile, you go after your
name is chosen via lottery. There's no wriggling out. If you
harm yourself you go to prison. All the necessaries for maintaining
life and comfort for say two years would accompany the colonists.
No more contact with Earth. You're on your own
It would be the ultimate in living off grid. What an adventure.
Would you want to go ? Would you volunteer ?

No.

I would have to know what is available for food, air, water, etc.

There would be no phones, computers, TV's and communications.

We would miss all the commercials, propaganda, political lies, theft, murders, riots, over population, traffic, pollution and noise.

There would be no one to try to own or control us and no taxes. Our government wouldn't hear of this.

Plus, if conditions were established, improved, all the hard work done and made comfortable to live in there would then be a tidal wave of "immigrants" arrive to take over and demand their rights.

Except for the absence of communications and taxes it's as if I've lived this before and witnessed what is around us now only to occur again if we start over.

Yes it would be a hardship not having to pay taxes.
But if the planet was known to have no mosquitoes, ticks,
fleas or bed bugs and the indigenous women had legs like
Betty Grable would that tempt you ?

I did, sort of.
I was working with a company that had purchased space (& weight) on an 80's era STS mission. My involvement was a data recording package involving long roll film cameras (250 exposure) a timer (intervalometer), a camera & lens. All had to be heavily modified to operate in Space. Because of this & was working very closely with NASA to get the one-off equipment correctly modified in a functional way.
I tried really hard to get somehow (insanely outside chance) into the program!
I WANTED to go into space.
Why?
Well the entire history of Mankind has been one of expansion & this was the logical next expansion.

The people who I was working for supported my desire. I did have some of the Quals required too, college level education, a bunch of "Jet Hours", & the technical photographic background.
I even offered to do it for just the cost of housing , training & food! I believed in it that much.

Needless to say, It never happened, but it wasn't for the lack of trying.
Everyone involved told me it was a 10,000,000 to 1 chance, but if it ever came up I at least had my name & resume in the works.
