    Battle of Midway -Yorktown and Akagi wrecks ...

    You can never see much with these underwater pics.
    The Akagi used biplanes ? Surely that pic must have
    been taken at another time with her deck crowded like that ?
    How could they take off ?

    I wondered about that too. The pic I saw showed all the engines running at once too. No plane could have taken off and during the war Japan didn't have fuel to waste running engines needlessly.

      The Akagi was commissioned in 1927, the Wikipedia article on it shows a picture from 1929 with biplanes on its deck.

        I saw another pic with both the Akagi and another carrier with their decks filled with biplanes and it was dated 1934.

        However, you may be surprised the most ships sunk by aircraft in WWII was by a British biplane called the Swordfish.
