Anyone know the situation in/around Mountain City TN or have connections there? Friend is trying to get a hold of someone there.

Getting in touch with the police or sheriffs dept by phone is near impossible these days. If I were him I would contact the local post office there or city hall to check on roads, phone, power lines and such. Might even try the pastors of the churches there. Finding the phone #'s shouldn't be too awful hard.

Maybe you already tried this. Does the town have a web site? May be able to contact police that way.
Red Cross might be another alternative contact.
Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

This may be a little help. It's a Google Traffic map that we use daily to check my daughters travels. It is mainly for traffic but will indicate closed roads as well. You will need to zoom in or out and scroll/use the arrows to pinpoint what area you need. Hope this helps.

local news suggested that it someone you wanted to reach has a cell phone, (and of course, it has a charge) to text that number, apparently it is on a different system and will sometimes get thru when a call or inet will not

It's times like these when ham radio proves how beneficial it is as a means to communicate when telephone lines and cell towers are out of commission.
