To be stripped and cleaned in Mobile, AL. I suppose it will be within site of the SS United States that's already here being dissected.

I live 6.5 miles from her . Just saw her a couple days ago at pier 3.
"Any hazardous material, including radioactive waste, will be disposed of properly." Right, probably the lowest bid..
The whole boat is radioactive ...I know, I was a nuclear engineer at the shipyard...👍 2 -
Amazing that the cost of disassembly will be over $500 M. I think that is more than the total annual expenditures of some small countriesComment

$40M was spent on the SS US over 30 years w/o any clean up. Big difference between that and the $500M for the Enterprise but still a lot of $.

I served aboard the USS Enterprise in 1963 while she was on a 6 month deployment in the Mediterranean. The Navy liked to parade her around to the NATO countries and under Russia’s nose because she certainly was the Queen of fleet. She will be replaced by a new Gerald Ford clas USS Enterprise in a few years. Interesting fact: the government originally planned to build a total of 4 Enterprise class carriers, but the cost over-runs exceeded the original budget significantly and resulted in the cancellation of the project. She will never be a museum because technically, she probably still has classified portions plus she will have to be stripped of 6 Westinghouse propulsion reactors which will require extensive dismantling.Comment

I also served aboard the Saratoga and Shangri La. The difference in size between the Enterprise and the Shang was amazing to see. One of the Shang’s props sits in front of a restaurant near Dover, DE. I don’t know of anything else of significance that’s left of her.

I grew up in a neighborhood of Newport News and knew most all of the engineers/ designers of the Enterprise and Nimitz carriers.
Robert Sumrall: hull design, based off of SS United States. lived 7 houses away from us.
Donald Kane, head of Advance Propulsion Design, lost lower left leg a few weeks after d-day in Normandy. lived round around the block.
Many, many more that I could mention. I have heard so many Rickover stories from these guys.
The shipyard issued an order back in the 70s that no one could sell candy or cigarettes from their desk..
Mr. Kane politely disagreed and sent his super-hot secretary to one his subordinates the same day to purchase a candy-bar...
