Got out @ 0800 this morning and whacked 5 x 6 shots. A couple fellow from Mich were already out there and had the doves all revved up. No worries - we have a lot of them. I asked if they drove all the way to middle o' nowhere just to whack a few birds & they said they were on their way to Wyo where they meant to try their luck getting over-the-counter antelope permits so they could hunt public walk-in places. Good luck with that! Putting the sneak on goats in a walk-in place is a real challenge.
I just sat in the truck and waited for more to fly in & graze on sunflower seeds. When they did, I'd creep up on them and got a few shots as mentioned. They're marinating in the fridge now - I'll try for at least 5 more before I cook them. I likes me some dove breast!
I used my long time dove whacker - a Marlin model 43 with extra tight full choke. A previous owner had added a bit of filler to the stock, and it fits me just right. It's ugly as sin, but it fits me better than any other shotgun I've ever owned.

Primo dove habitat - sunflowers and what's called locally, "stinkweed". Can't tell you the actual name. It has seed pods that smell of hot chiles. Doves like the seed as well as they do hemp.

Dove #1 - chilling in the fridge as I type.
