    Old Movie

I'm not too much into old movies but sometimes watch them to view the old cars, buildings, store fronts, city streets, and just to get a reminder of simpler and older times. I'm speaking of actual footage and not recreation movie sets. One reason I liked the old "little Rascal" shows.

Today I tuned in and saw the last half of a 1934 film "Here Comes the Navy" with James Cagney, Pat O'Brien, and Gloria Stuart. Now, while the basic plot of this movie is typical romance BS a lot of equipment of the era was shown. I was surprised to see the U.S.S. Arizona, old bi-wing bomber and torpedo planes with the radial engines but mostly the Macon blimp shown in operation and in it's hangar, none of which exist any longer. I assume since this was 1934 and in current use that all of this was authentic.

one of my favorite old movies is Run Silent, Run Deep,

good story, good cast, and done well

later a similar theme was done as a Star Trek episode (Balance of Terror)

Allen mentioned the Navy blimp; in 1966 while statoned at Travis AFB, I had occasion to go TDY to the Navy base in San Francicso (name?) that had a HUGE black hanger. We were told that was where we were to store our quipment. The Chief in charge told us to cover our equipment from rain inside the hanger. History he gave us was the hanger was originally built for the Navy rigid airships and later for the blimps. It was so huge that it created its own climate when the doors were open. He said clous would form and it would sometimes rain inside. I did see clouds, but no rain.

I don't know if that hanger is still there, maybe some here were stationed there and remember it.

I stand corrected. There were several blimp hangers, some metal and some wooden. Some have been demolished. Some are set to be demolished. Some have been repurposed. The hanger used for the Macon is metal and still exist per the article I read (Moffett Field, California).

Looks like those in the South and SE are the ones gone. I suspect hurricanes helped.
