    Silencer question

    Lyman,

I'm getting ready to join the silencer club. I realize the paperwork needs to be done and approved, but is the $200 tax still paid? I know there was some change but can't recall what it was. Same for SBR? SW

    From the web:

"No, the $200 federal tax stamp is
no longer required for purchasing suppressors (silencers) as of January 1, 2026, due to the H.R. 1 "One Big Beautiful Bill" Act, making the tax $0, but the mandatory ATF application, background check, fingerprints, and approval process remain in place.

Lyman can no doubt add to that.

      no,

      silencers are now ''free''

you still need to to a form 4, finger prints, and passport photo,
and if a trust, supply the trust paperwork and responsible person paperwork

your local SOT should be able to help, if not, you have my email, shoot me a note or call (not sure if I have yoru number or not)

Thanks! We have a couple class 3 dealers not far away, so I'll start checking with them regarding the forms and cost of cans. SW

go to the ATF website and set up a eform account, , you will get a log in name (probably first initial and part of you last name, and a group of number, like Swoodr1234 or similar,
set up a password and a pin

when you do the online form 4, you will need the login name and pin,
your dealer, if they do efile, and they should, can submitt everything online in a few minutes (word is the system is slow do to volume)

you can mail in the prints, but send it priority , or even express, since you have 10 days or so, don't rely on snail mail

Instead of that possible ivory "cutlass", I think I'll sink the $ into a can or make my PPS-43 an SBR. SW

I should have done more research in the beginning. Prices for a 9mm can seem to be in the $700 range. That's on top of a threaded barrel for my BHP. 22 cal cans are much more affordable @ 250 - 300. So I'll start the process of getting a can for my Ruger 22/45. SW

Just a reminder and it may not be an issue at all with a pistol but a silencer will reduce the "bang" but not any sonic velocity "crack". I suppose the barrel on that Ruger is short enough where this may not be a concern, or you may find sub-sonic ammo that will function.

I like revolvers and have a S&W 34, 17, and 617 (ten shot). I shoot the 22 shorts in them (and bolt action rifles) due all the unwanted neighbors I have accumulated over the years. It is no louder than a cap pistol. I buy the CCI CB/22 short ammo at WM. They are quite strong for 22's.

I ran 2 more eforms this week, and both kept rejecting submission, this was after numerous tries

fortunately I wrote down the ID number on the form and was able to pull up the draft with that number, and both submitted, (one immediately, one after 8 tries) at 9am eastern

seems it is best to submit in off hours,

time wise, with about 20 minutes between submissions, the form numbers increased by over 1500

Would have been SO much easier for everybody just to declare them legal. Ah, but the dems can't have their opposition smiling about anything. SW
