I'm not even sure what it's about. All I can tell you is the bank was closed when I went to deposit some scratch card $ in my toy account. Sounds like no mail, either... not that we get much mail anyway. SW

Slavery day? Okay - a little more on that. Turns out my ancestors in Va. owned some. How did I find that out? By reading the earliest census records. Slaves were recorded for purposes of representation in Congress, but not evenly. Can't recall the ratio, but it was something like 5 slaves = one white person for that purpose. Like Farmer Jones had 3 children, 3 male slaves and one female slave.
I found those records at the National Archives branch office in Denver while doing other genealogy research. No branch office near you? The Mormon church has census records you can view on microfilm at no cost. They were very helpful and never once hit on me to attend a class or join up.
Wifey's fam also settled in VA - even in the same county as Abe Lincoln's. Records show they had slaves, but that was the earliest census I could find.
Principle crops at that time were cotton & tobacco - both extremely labor intensive, thus the need for slaves. Which was morally wrong, of course, but that's how folks rolled back then. SWComment

from what I remember from grade school history, the ratio was 3/5th, and one of the reasons for war was a change in that percentage,
not saying it was right or wrong, as far as I know, my direct fraternal ancestor was maybe 10 when he got her, and possibly an indentured servant (fancy way of saying white slave, kinda)
what county were you and the wife's folks from?
my direct ancestor was in 1610 Jamestown, fresh off the boat, and eventually moved south to the Halifax, area, and northern NC. ,

Both sides emigrated from what's now the UK. However my paternal grand parents were Dutch - they settled in cheese head land. In the Suffolk and Norfolk phonebooks to this day there are more entries of my fam name that Jones - close tie with Smith, almost. SWComment

So much of this current society we live in is "identity" dependent for some strange reason.
Just last week was national "Pride" day, and today, as well as being Fathers Day, is National "Indigenous" day.
It's also Manitoba Marathon Day, so there's a bit to choose from this Sunday.

online white pages, since they probably don't print a real phone book anymore, for Suffolk VA, and there are 41 people with your last name,
10000 Jones,

And I have been known to embellish things on occasion.
But there were a bunch of them in the white pages - didn't count Jones, though. SW
