sa 1919 bayonet???

im new here and just have a ???? i was cleaning out a old shed in my back yard so i can rip it down and in the rafters i found a sa 1919 bayonet

it is in very good condition. The sheath has 4 little cuts in it and some were marks but still in nice shape for its age. the release button works fine and it has the black plastic handles on it and there in good shape no chips or brakes in it [IMG][/IMG]

You have a cut down 1905, that was cut down during WW2. Did you put it there and forgot and did you find the M1 Garand that goes with it. Great find. I cleaned my garage and only found mouse droppings.

No i didn't put it there. I moved to a new place and just wanted to rip the shed down and it was rapped in a rag in the rafters. Any idea on the value of it ???

The CMP has been selling these for the last year or so for $65, so I'd say they have driven down the price some. http://www.odcmp.com/Sales/accessories.htm It appears they have sold out of the original SA and RIA cut down bayonets.

Your bayonet was made with a 16" blade and wooden handles originally. During WW2 they cut down large numbers of the 16" bayonets to 10" blades. The plastic handles on your bayonet are likely from that time as those are WW2. Not much more to know than that. If it retained the wooden handles and 16" blade it would be worth about 5X what it is now.

About 75,000 bayonets were made by Springfield that year. Add another 45,000 from RIA. They were too late for the war of course.

The M-1905 bayonet, that's the model of those, will fit the M-1903 rifle (they were designed for that) and M1 Garand rifle. Widens the appeal that it works for both.

There is a for sale board here - list it at $125 and see if it goes. If not slowly lower it until it does. 1919 isn't a bad date and I'd think it'd get more than the CMP Greeks as those have ugly numbers stamped into the guards.
