Did this serial # begin life as a carbine?

A friend has a carbine he inherited and he's interested in discovering if it's a true carbine or a shortened rifle. Serial #84573. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Len

Looks like it was probably a rifle:

    84603 96R 98 CO F 4TH ILL VOL INF

    Pictures would probably confirm.

Pictures would help determine if it's a cutdown sporter or fake carbine (yes, they do exist).
