I recently picked up a model 1898 rifle that was missing the ladder and slider from the rear sight, I ordered what I thought were the correct parts, but the ladder does not fit it is almost as if the base is mounted backwards. any thoughts ?
What sight base do I have ?

It's a Krag, model 1898, so it is made by Springfield, there are no other markings on the base other than on the other side has range markings,When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser, SocratesComment

It might be helpful to know the serial number, but in the meantime, I agree with JimF. It looks like a base for a Model 1896 which would be correct for an 1898 with an early in the model serial number range. I have an 1898 with a '96 sight and the corresponding handguard. Serial number is 129638.Comment

'Parashooter' - Lovely pictures of your "humped" model 1896 carbine sight.
'DRAGONFLYDF' - A complete model 1896 rifle sight is relatively easy to find and routinely sells for about $45-$55 on ebay. You can try ''Movieman630" for missing leaf and slide (Joe DeChristopher's grandson).Comment
