Question on carbine stock:

I have a Krag carbine stock was was cleaning up for a friend and I am wondering about the stock configuration.

The carbine stock as the round/oval cutout by the bolt handle cut I associcaite with model 1896 stocks, but is dated 1904 on the left side. It is not cut for the 1894 bolt handle reciever lug, just the round cutThe inspector is a three letter which could be YLH or FYA but is most likely YFA. Under the stock, behind the triggerguard is a single round stamp with a script P mark. There is no carbine sling ring.

Any idea what thsi might be? 1904 is past the date when these riflel werre being made and it is nto a cutdown rifle stock, I hedl it next to my 1894 and 1898 rifles and the location of the band is different.

At first I thought that you were describing a normal 32" M1899 stock, as made for repairing M1896 carbines - as some were made in 1901 (a worn 1901 is sometimes misread as 1904 or 1907, due to wood grain or local damage). Since you have other Krags, you know (or should know) that the initials should be JSA, but your suggestions make me wonder if it is just worn and you are misreading it. The comment about band placement is VERY strange, unless you have one of the 30" stocks made without the sling ring as late replacements? This really needs some good pictures.

Maybe Dick, but he's also saying it has the scallop cut, but not the cut for the 96 bolt handle seat.

Yes, I saw that. No way the armory did "half-a-prep", I sense Bubba, in some form or another. PICTURES NEEDED.

I am not a Krag expert, just a chap who has two krags and has read the very basics.

It might be bubba, it has a stock repair
