Krag handguard model?

I found this factory new handguard in a box of other gun wood. What model rifle or carbine does it fit?

That is for a Model 1899 (or re-stocked Model 1898) carbine, when equipped with the Model 1896 rear sight.

That is for a Model 1899 (or re-stocked Model 1898) carbine, when equipped with the Model 1896 rear sight.

I believe this handguard was retained even after the 1896 sights were replaced with the 1901.
