Krag cleaning kit

I was looking into buying an original cleaning kit for my Krags. What I understand is that the 3 cleaning rods are 8 inches long. That would make the cleaning rod to short for cleaning the rifle????
Are the rods really 8 inches long??? Why would they make a cleaning rod too short for a rifle???

Most cleaning was done with the long (loop handled) brass barrack's cleaning rods. The three section rod in the butt trap was used for cleaning in the field.
