How to determine the functionally of a UNIVERSAL M1 Carbine?

Daughter has a new house and like to have buy a Carbine for the house.

What to look for?

I think some past info had series of SN ranges to look for??

If the Universal Carbine is one of the later models with 2 recoil springs and a skeletal op rod stay away from it. If already owned----sell it.

Buy a USGI carbine if she is going to go that route. A Plainfield brand commercial make is OK too.

She needs a gun for self dense and reliability, not something that will jam or blow up in her face.

It is not unheard of for the Universal carbines to blow the gas piston housing off the barrel.
