While surfing the web for general M-1 info, have noticed on some pictures of parts mainly front & rear sights, have red paint on them. Does this have a meaning? Can't be good.

Nothing that I am aware of. But I have not seen any parts for carbines with red paint on them. -
Something sticks in my mind about using red fingernail polish on the windage and elevation markings to denote the zero point for the rifle. So the shooter could rapidly reset to the 100yrd zero. Mostly in civilian use. Don't thing a RANGE NCO or unit armorer would like nasty red paint on their riflees during a armory IG inspection.

It was a marking applied by the British so they would not try to load .303 in them.

Both of the above are correct. Depends on how much and where it is:
-The Brits put about a 2in red band around the front handguard of .30-'06 rifles
-Most competition shooters put witness marks on the rear sight base, windage knob, gas cylinder lock screw, and front sight to show if those parts have moved and how much; I believe the USMC Team used red
Or it could be something else.
