not exactly M1/M14/M1A but BAR in a movie

Retro is playing "the Halls of Montezuma" today...

about 16:30 or so into the movie as they are making an amphibious assault and Lt Anderson (Richard Widmark) has called for tank support, there is a Sherman rolling past a rifleman and a BARman. the BAR has what appears to be a globe sight on it. or it had a hood on it...

we had an M1918A2 BAR in California where i was stationed and i believe it had a regular post front sight...

Nothing seen in movies is real. Anything resembling a correct firearm can be used in a movie. If you've seen 'The Wild Bunch' supposed taking place in 1913, you may have noticed the 1903A3 used by Strother Martin 29 years before it existed.

In Patton it's the Spanish Army doubling for the Germans and the GIs, I think the only time you see a Sherman tank is in the newsreel clips.
I'm still looking for one of those left-handed M1893 Mausers the Spanish troops carry in Rough Riders.

Although very well made... Patton actually gives me a chuckle when I see those tanks: M-47s (Korean era) for the Germans and M-48s (Vietnam era) for the Americans.

What you saw was correct. The BAR had a front sight hood. The movie was made with the full support of the USMC. The weapons being carried by the troops were real. It is my understanding that these men were in their final training phase before shipping to Korea.

            Hollyweed......God love 'em.

"The Pacific", followup to 'Band of Brothers'; Guadalcanal: machine gun ammo boxes made of wood, Check! Canteen caps made of metal, Check! And yet every Marine is carrying an 03A3! NOT!

Henry Fonda sighting in on a Nazi tank commander......close up......there's NO rear sight on Fonda's M!
