Uncut op rod

My CMP Oct/Nov 1942 M1 rifle still has its original uncut op rod. Does anyone think I should replace it with a cut op rod?

You could always buy another operating rod with the relief cut if you shoot it alot, this
way you still have the original op rod which will add to the value. the military use the
un-cut all thought WW2 and fired alot of rounds

There isn’t much of a chance the uncut rod would ever break as long as the rifle isn’t used to fire grenades I guess. I’ll just leave it on the rifle and buy a cut rod to have as a spare.

Fred, nothing related to firing rifle grenades as the M7 grenade launcher blocks off the
gas port and the bolt does not move back when grenade is fired.

I used to own a 90% original Winchester garand with the uncut op rod. I fired hundreds of rounds (Danish surplus) thru it with no problems!

How good is Iranian 30-06 made made for Garands during the Shah?s reign?

I can not answer, never fired anything else except US manufactured military

maybe someone has used it ?

If you can find it, the Danish surplus 30-06 ammo is the best ever! It is berdan primed tho, but comes in a wood crate of 600 rounds all packed in bandoliers and M1 enbloc 8 round clips. I had 3 crates of it at one time long ago.

During WW2 the M1 rifle had somewhat of a problem with operating rods cracking at the joint where the handle meets the body of the rod as I know that you are already aware of. The percentage of cracked rods must have been very low as the milled radius in the corner was a modification introduced fairly late. There were, however recorded cased where the rod handle cracked so badly that the rod actually had to be replaced. I am sure that this was a fairly rare failure.
Uncut rods are high in demand by collectors so it might be a good idea to get a modified rod for range duty or general shooting. They are also getting to be quite spendy.
