Postwar Garand, Barrel and Reciever Date Range.

My Garand is an SA 530xxxx, which I understand places it in early to mid-1954. The barrel is ragged, so I am looking at replacement. Question is: for a receiver of that age, what would be the standard date range variation for such a reciever, in other words, would you expect to see a late '53 SA barrel or an August '54 SA barrel on such a receiver? Thanks.

Scott Duff's green book lists SA 5453504 with a barrel date of 12-54.

What is the date on the current barrel?

SA#530????? have 9,999 receivers in that group.
Their are 5 to 6 heat lots and barrels range from SA 12-53
thru mid 1954.Their are an assortment to NM rifles and
      1960s rebuilds.
As before a complete serial number and Heat lot would give you
      a more precise barrel date.

My current barrel is a March 1953 SA; I'm thinking of replacement, and am looking at an August 1954 barrel, and trying to figure out if the latter would be in range.

If your rifle is already a later 50's rebuild, sure. Otherwise, if you want to emulate OEM, the barrel would need to be no more than 2 to 3 months later than the receiver. A new CMP Criterion barrel would be a quicker alternative and you know it'll shoot at least good.

Why all the X's in serial numbers? I have never owned a firearm with X's in the serial number (military firearms that is).

                  I would feel better with a barrel of 2-54, 3 of-54 or at most, 4 - 54. I would think 8 - 54 would be a bit to late though possible.

My 4,395,XXX Garand has a barrel date of 3-54. Of course, I installed it my self when I bought it from my Gun Club with a shot-out barrel.
