Headspace correction

What has to be done to the M1 to correct for headspace field gauge failure? Thanks

Rebarrel. It cannot be corrected by setting the old barrel back.

Try a -2 Bolt, or possibly a brand new, later bolt, they are frequently "longer" - someone will chime in with the list of which M1 Garand bolts tend to be longer, and which bolts are shorter. I know I used a WRA bolt to correct too tight headspace to "Perfect" in an M1 I rebarreled with a VAR barrel - the SA bolts I had were too "tight"/long.

If the reciever has stretched, this may not work, but I believe that is pretty rare. CC

Which field gage are we talking about here? !.946 or 1.950? As long as the chamber HS does not exceed 1.950 it's probably serviceable. Excess of !.946 was serviceable for training and use in the CONUS, but not deployable overseas.

I have read other similar posts about excessive headspace and bolt swapping to correct it. Out of the posts I have read, I have seen numerous suggestions that a SA -19 bolt is among the bolts known to be on the long side.

If you go shopping for a SA-19 bolt avoid heat lot 0-16, this heat lot is reported to be bad and susceptible to failure.

I used a SA-19 heat lot A-9 recently when I needed a longer bolt to pass on a Clymer FIELD gauge.
