Phaseout date for the Rifle Grenade

The thread in Gun Talk about two members of a VFW color guard alleging they received "grenade" catridges instead of regular blanks prompts me to ask when was the Rifle Grenade finally phased out. I enslited in the Army in 1967 and they were long gone by then.

Well, we practiced with the M1 and rifle grenades in early 1966 in the Marine Corps at Camp Lejune NC.

      rifle grenades

When the M14 was adopted, the M76 grenade launcher was also adopted for the M14. With the Viet Nam war starting to
expand, the new M79 40mm launcher became standard issue with the M1911A1 pistol, later some M16 rifles also had the
40mm launcher under the barrel. P1010012_0012.jpgP1010015_0015.jpgP1010014_0014.jpg

They were still making practice rifle grenades at the end of 1963 and maybe later. The last date I have is 10-63. I would suspect probably up until late 60's with the M-14. Need to do more research
