Here is my tribute to the 2015 games. A type 1 NM purchased at the 1955 games in unfired condition. As far as I know it may be the earliest NM purchased by the public. It predates the 50 or so identified in the Canfield article as far as I can tell. Trying to do this from my phone so not sure how it will turn out.

Guns were meant to be shot. Some rare examples should be fired with care and minimal rounds. I shoot ALL my guns and even my 1884 pristine trapdoor rifle.

Thank you for the comment and your question is not stupid. I have not fired it. I have another type 1 the shooter upgraded that I've fired. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to fire it but I have no reason to at this time. Maybe it could be the first shot on its 65th anniversary in 2020. I have owner verification documents, but a couple of years ago I asked the CMP to verify it and fortunately they had the card from 1955 in their records too. However, on their verification they redacted the original purchasers name but I already have that.

Beautiful. Would be nice if you could write and article with photos and submit to the GCA for publication in a future GCA Journal. Can't be many around from 1955 other than those few purchased at Perry and a few sold via DCM mail order late in 1955. I have one that was purchased at the 1957 National Matches. I did take it to the range one time and fired about 40 rounds. Doubt I will shoot it again. No point, as I have others to shoot.

What kind of sling did the NM rifles ship with? 1958-1972?

You need to write Bob Seijas on this. No one knows more about the NM Garands than him. Plus he loves them and I'm sure he would love to see it.

Tim, As far as I know, NM rifles were shipped with the standard M1 web sling.

Years ago when I was offered the rifle(s), I conferred with Bob to see what a reasonable price would be.
