    AR-15 magazine five round block

Here is a part you never see and rare to find as most were tossed out. Years ago
when you bought a new Colt AR-15 SP1 sporter the magazines were blocked
to only hold five rounds for hunting. dscn0805_0028.jpgdscn2881.jpgdscn2882.jpg

    Yup . . . .
This is what was on my early 1965-era SP1. The floorplate was stamped .223 REM. . . . . .NOT 5.56mm!

A short time later, I found another at a gun show.

My 71 SP1 came with 2 blocked magazines marked .223. Since Washington state did not allow any large or medium game hunting with .223 (at that time) I saw no sense in the blocks and removed them. They were not riveted and have been lost in time.

          early Colt mags

The early magazine block was drop in

My three digit SP1 shown in first post had the magazines with the
small CAL. .223 stamp which I believe is the first unless you count
          the Armalite magazineP1010018_0017.jpg

Interesting that you should post about the early .223 magazines. Yesterday I was digging through an old foot locker and buried on the bottom was one of my old Sp1 magazines. I was surprised because I thought I had sold them both with the rifle. Still looks in good condition. I guess I didn't use it much!
