    1903 Removable FS base with #2 ?

Occasionally, I run across a 1903 Springfield front-sight base with the number 2 stamped on it. What is the significance of this marking? (Contractor, Different height, Replacement)?

Not positive, but I'll take a guess. I believe those to be found on mid to late '30's rifle(rebuilds, I think). You'll also find numbers like that on the stock bolts and mag cut-offs, I believe.

Thank you, Mike. (I've not been able to find anything on the '2' in my references).

The "2" on the stock bolts is a revision number. What they revised in the design I do not know. I don't recall seeing it on a sight or magazine cut off. I mean, the sight has been the same since rod bayonet rifles were done away with, what is there to revise ??

        FWIW,

Late production SA magazine cutoffs are indeed marked with a drawing revision number.
