US Army at that time.
It has the most amazing view of Manhattan when I visited in the 70s (USCG at that time).

Pretty amazing.

I'm fascinated by the soldier's choice in pin-ups: two little girls and a Newfoundland.
I believe I remember reading that Townsend Whelen was once stationed there. Wiki's military history is a little sketchy; it became HQ for the First Army in '39, but no account of what unit would have occupied it in '09.Comment

Judging from the banner on the back wall it was Fox Company, 12th Infantry, who by chance were stationed there from 1906 to Sept 1909. Here, check out page 166...

3/5/1909 was a Friday. Wonder if that was the photo date or the date the photo was developed? Well lived in barracks. Lots of photos on the walls. Soldiers lounging in their racks during off hours. No tv or radio, only books to read or letters to write. Big lock on the gun rack.Comment

Beyond page 166, book is quite interesting...such as story of Royal American Regiment stationed there, but shipped to another British territory shortly before the rebellion began in 1775; wonder if any of them deserted to join the American cause?Judging from the banner on the back wall it was Fox Company, 12th Infantry, who by chance were stationed there from 1906 to Sept 1909. Here, check out page 166...

Now, if only that world - and its accompanying 03's - could still be with us today, with the addition of modern medicine and the internet maybe, we'd all be well.
I was singing The Who song "Dreaming from the Waist" the other day when I was walking around at work but it could just as easily be "Dreaming of '03's (or Type 38's or Type 99's or Lebels, or MAS-36's, or Gras' or Carcano's)."
Thanks for posting that wonderful picture!
Best,
