Hello to everyone here! I just picked up a Springfield 1903 (well at least the receiver is) and I'm trying to figure out how many different guns this thing is made of. Any info would be much appreciated. The stock seems to be fitted to the rest of the gun very well but does not look like any m1903 I've ever seen. The barrel has two grooves that go around the front sight which I've also never seen. Well the barrel is an 03 with a ramp front sight. The rear sight is just drilled and tapped. The stock looks to be an aftermarket stock. So far most parts are 1903."Three people can keep a secret as long as two of them are dead" Mark Twain -
Thanks! I'd like to pull the stock off and get the correct one. My concern was that it was an a3 barrel and then the new stock wouldn't match up.
Did they make those sights from Springfield or is that an add on? I'd like to make this thing as close to original as I can. Thanks again for the info!Comment

You have a 1903 barrel that is missing the rear sight base. I cannot tell if the barrel has been cut down. I was wondering if if had been cut down also because there is no stamps/markings on the barrel end. Seems like there's always the company and the flaming bomb. This barrel has nothing near the front sight except the two rings around the circumference. I thought it was a remington barrel because of the rep stamp, but it's got a 34 after rep not a letter date code. Barrel is exactly 23 3/16 inches from receiver to tip. With all the new parts and work required to get this back to "original", you might have more money tied up I the restoration than the rifle would be worth.Comment

I'm not even sure that's a 1903 or A3 barrel! The date markings would still be somewhat visible because the ramp is narrower then the date stamp but the biggest thing is the 2 grooves in the barrel at the receiver: Looks like a Garand barrel turned down.Comment

'Cgoodsr' - As others have said, your barrel appears to be a model 1903 Springfield barrel, based on the existing 'pin grooves' that once held the 1903 rear-sight collar in place.
You measured your barrel length in a non-standard fashion. (You stated you measured from the muzzle to the front of the action. This would cause your measurement to come up short). The barrel may actually be its original length of 24 inches.
The barrel length measurement should be done with a cleaning rod, placed in the bore, against the closed bolt-face, and marked at the muzzle crown (24").
It does appear someone machined a couple of grooves around your barrel near the muzzle. Possibly this was done to assist 'driving-off' a tight fitting front-sight fixed-base.
