Just to introduce myself, my name is Bill Martin. I am a former Marine (Sgt E-5) and actually served in Second Recon when Maj Culver was there and know first hand at least some of his sea stories. He coached (actually fussed at) me during my last rifle qual before leaving the Marines to attend college. Ended up commissioned in and retired from Navy (mostly reserve), retiring as O-6 (Intelligence)in 1996.

I was drawn to this site in an effort to get more 1903A3 info... trying to track down info on a straight stock with a "B" cartouche on the left butt, just forward of the butt plate. Any intel appreciated.

Yep... recognize that. And apparently not an arsenal restock, but still curious. Smith Corona receiver/barrel. Remington Butt plate and fore guard.

Welcome to the forum, Bill. Glad you decided to join us. I don't know about the "B". Are there any other markings on the stock at all? In the bolt handle recess, perhaps? Is the forward edge of the retaining clip cutout square or round? Any other unusual characteristics on the rifle?

Also you should check the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) forums; they also have a thread dedicated to US military bolt action rifles. In either forum if John Beard answers you will have struck gold.

Welcome Bill! Not sure about that little B, but from the looks of the circled P stamp, I'd say it's a Rem made stock. One that's been well sanded at some point.

Your photos are working fine. If you want to know more, post plenty of photos, I'm sure we can pick things apart.

I am unable to identify the "B" stamped in your stock. I can only assume that it's an arsenal re-inspection stamp on a rifle turned in for overhaul.
